What is a doula?
What Is a Doula—and Why You Might Want One
When people hear the word doula, they often ask: “So… you’re kind of like a midwife?” Not quite.
While midwives are trained medical providers, doulas are professional support companions—emotionally, physically, and informationally present before, during, and after birth. We don’t deliver babies. We don’t make medical decisions. We’re not in charge of your birth—we walk alongside it, holding you up when things get heavy and cheering you on when you feel strong.
A Timeless Role, Rooted in Community
The concept of doula support isn’t new. For thousands of years, birthing people have been surrounded by others—elders, sisters, friends—offering care through labor and the vulnerable weeks after birth. Modern doulas carry that lineage, but with evidence-based knowledge, trauma-informed care, and a fierce commitment to your autonomy.
Whether you’re planning a hospital birth, home birth, or something in between, a doula helps you feel prepared, heard, and supported at every turn.
So… What Does a Doula Actually Do?
Every doula brings their own approach, but here’s what my support as a certified doula might include:
And after birth? I stick around to help you transition into postpartum life with gentleness and grounding—because you matter after the birth, too.
Why It Matters
Research backs it up: hiring a doula is linked to shorter labors, fewer interventions, less need for pain medication, and higher satisfaction with the birth experience. But even beyond stats, people often say, “I couldn’t have done it without my doula.”
Because when everything feels overwhelming or uncertain, having someone who’s been there—calm, present, and not leaving—can make all the difference.
Doula Support Is for You
You don’t need to be planning an unmedicated birth. You don’t need to have a certain kind of pregnancy. You don’t need to be partnered or even totally sure what kind of birth you want. If you want to feel more supported, more informed, and more empowered—doula care can be for you.
